Arguably, Goodal Gondwe who served as Minister of Finance in the past three governments was widely regarded as a towering figure who possessed a remarkable ability to stabilize and advance the Malawi economy. Therefore, upon learning of his passing of former Finance Minister, Malawians, led by President Lazarus Chakwera, have expressed their condolences.
As for Chakwera, he says in his condolence that ‘legacy’ of Gondwe should continue to ‘inspire us all.’
“The first lady and I are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of former Minister of Finance, Goodal Gondwe. His dedicated service and contributions to our nation will forever be remembered. Please accept our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time. May his legacy continue to inspire us all,” said Chakwera.
Lawyer Allabi Mailos was also full of praise for the departed hero.
“You needed not to be an expert in the financial sector to know that Goodall Gondwe was a man and half. In recent times, in my opinion, he was like that retired player whose only presence at the field of play was enough for the motivation and confidence of the players despite the fact that under no any circumstances he would play. Just the hope and imagination that maybe Goodall will speak/advice or be consulted was enough to keep many (us) hopeful kuti someday ziyenda. If it was in the football circles, we would equate him to the likes of Diego Maradona and Ronaldinho who, during their time and beyond, defined what is and is not. Goodall defined or showed us what and who is and is not,” he said.
