Following a long-standing tradition, the permanent council of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) presented two recently elected bishops to President Lazarus Chakwera yesterday at Kamuzu Palace in the Capital Lilongwe. The bishops-elect, Fr Alfred Chaima for Zomba diocese and Fr Yohane Suzgo Nyirenda as auxiliary bishop for Mzuzu diocese, are set to be consecrated in August of this year.
During the presentation, Archbishop George Tambala, President of the ECM permanent council, took the opportunity to invite President Chakwera to attend the consecration ceremonies. The consecration for Mzuzu is scheduled for August 5th, while the consecration for Zomba will take place on August 12th.
Fr Francis Damaseke, the National Coordinator for Communications and Social Research at ECM, explained that it is customary “whenever the Pope appoints a new bishop, for the bishop to be introduced to the head of state.”
