Kabambe thinks Michael Usi is an easy target after failing to dislodge APM in DPP?

Kabambe has joined UTM

Dear Editor,

Prove me wrong if you can. Dr. Dalitso Kabambe might be a whiz with economic jargon, but when it comes to political savvy, he’s woefully out of his depth. It’s no longer a secret that Kabambe was eyeing the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) top spot for 2025. Initially, he seemed like the favored successor to party leader Peter Mutharika, while figures like Kondwani Nankhumwa were sidelined. Kabambe assumed he would inherit the DPP presidency on a silver platter, only to realize that the path to power required a real fight—one he couldn’t win. Faced with this setback, he’s now trying to leap into UTM, seizing on the opportunity presented by the death of Saulos Chilima.

Kabambe’s delusions of grandeur are astounding. He’s been misled by sycophants like Patricia Kaliati and the Njawalas, who have convinced him that he has the political swaga to replace the late Chilima as UTM President and become the country’s President next year. What he’s failing to grasp is that UTM now has a new leader, Dr. Michael Usi, who is also the Vice President of Malawi. Usi’s elevated status is something Kabambe can only dream of, and he’s unlikely to attain if he continues to miscalculate politically as he has.

The likes of Kaliati are severely underestimating Usi. They’ll soon face a harsh reality because there’s a reason why the late UTM President chose Usi as his running mate in 2019, and why Lazarus Chakwera has appointed him Vice President. Kabambe’s belief that he can easily outmaneuver Usi by joining UTM is the hallmark of a political novice. Ultimately, he’ll be chasing every opportunity without finding a solid foothold, revealing his glaring lack of political insight.

Yours,

Joseph Masina.
