Malawi Police Service (MPS) Inspector General Merlyne Yolamu emphasized the importance of professionalism and integrity to newly recruited officers during their pass-out ceremony at Limbe Police Training School.
She stressed that as custodians of peace, officers must execute their duties with diligence and honesty to gain public trust.
“Don’t compromise your code of ethics but always employ patriotism, dedication, love and discipline to save Malawians better,” she said.
Yolamu, therefore, commended government for giving MPS an opportunity to recruit more officers.
“In 2021, MPS recruited 2,972 individuals and this time around we have added new officers totaling 6,341 police officers,” she added.
Minister of Homeland Security, Ken Zikhale N’goma stated that the graduation of the police recruits was a milestone to be commended.
“However, we have not attained the internationally recommended police population ratio. Currently with the establishment of 31,240, the workforce is 19,570, we have a huge gap of 15,042; representing 1:10 ratio,” he added.
However, Ng’oma said the current trend was contrary to the internationally recognised police population standard ratio.
N’goma said his ministry will continue to lobby for increased budgetary support towards the recruitment and training of more officers.
The pass out parade of 1,367 recruit constables comprised 518 females and 849 males.
Other officials who graced the occasion included the country’s Vice President, Dr. Saul’s Klaus Chilima and Zimbabwean Minister of Homeland Security, Kazembe Kazembe, among others.
