In honor of legacy, not division: The importance of the SKC Foundation

In a political climate often marred by misunderstandings, accusations, and fierce rivalries, we find ourselves at a crossroads with the launch of the SKC Foundation in memory of the late Saulos Klaus Chilima.

Chilima’s family has announced a decision to launch the foundation in preserving the memory and the honourable legacy of their departed kinsman. This initiative represents more than just an homage to a former Vice President; it embodies a call for unity and the reframing of national dialogue.

The passing of Chilima was not just a loss for his family but for the entire nation. He was a man of the people, an advocate for transformation, and a beacon of hope for many Malawians who believed in his aspirations and political service. Thus, it is disheartening to witness how some have sought to exploit his death, weaving conspiracy theories that aim to accuse President Lazarus Chakwera and tarnish the integrity of his public service.

Accusations of negligence and malevolence, as orchestrated by malicious opposition elements, overshadowed the mourning process, diverting attention from the commendable life Chilima led. Multiple inquiries have deemed these allegations baseless, yet they sought to persist with such conspiracies, seeking nothing but to deepen our political divides.

What the Chilima family has made clear is that, amid their sorrow, there is a desire for peace and respect for the legacy of their loved one. Mary Chilima’s invitation to President Chakwera to attend the foundation’s launch signifies a rejection of the hostile narratives that some have tried to propagate. It sends a powerful message: that we can honor the deceased while ignoring malicious conspiracies whose aim is to drive hostilities.
