High Court Halts DPP Convention Amidst Ongoing Legal Clash

No convention

Main Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament  for in Blantyre Chipiliro Mpinganjira has secured an injunction preventing estranged Secretary General Grizelda Jeffrey from executing the National Governing Council’s decisions held at the Golden Peacock Hotel in Lilongwe on December 6, 2023. These decisions included scheduling a convention for December 16, 2023, where Nankhumwa is eyeing the Party Presidency.

Today, the conflicting factions within the DPP are in court before High Court Judge Howard Pemba to resolve Jeffrey’s plea against President Peter Mutharika. She seeks to prevent Mutharika from appointing her as Vice President, effectively removing her as Secretary General.

Mutharika also recently ousted Nankhumwa as the Party’s Southern Region Vice President, replacing him with George Chaponda, his rival from the 2018 convention. Critics attribute the DPP’s turmoil to Mutharika’s perceived familial control over the party, lacking broader leadership.
