Former Malawi President Chakwera in Tanzania for Ongoing Peace Talks, Despite False Rumours

Chakwera; Commonwealth Envoy to Tanzania

Former Malawi president Dr. Lazarus Chakwera arrived safely in Tanzania on Tuesday at around 3 p.m., contrary to misleading reports circulating on social media. Sources close to the delegation confirmed that the former head of state is in the country under the auspices of the Commonwealth, continuing his assignment as a special envoy in efforts to support political dialogue in Tanzania.

On Monday, Dr. Chakwera held a series of meetings aimed at helping mediate tensions between the ruling party and the opposition. According to officials familiar with the discussions, the talks progressed positively and are expected to continue today.

As part of his mandate, Dr. Chakwera is today meeting political leaders, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to listen to their concerns and guide the dialogue process. His role, conferred by the Commonwealth Secretary-General, is to help the two sides find peaceful, lasting solutions to political disagreements in the country.

Meanwhile, a little-known organisation in Tanzania attempted to issue a statement questioning the legitimacy of Chakwera’s presence. Investigations show that the group was reportedly encouraged by individuals who still dispute the results of Tanzania’s election. Authorities and credible observers have dismissed the claims, stressing that the group has no influence or formal standing in national matters.

Dr. Chakwera’s appointment by the Commonwealth followed Malawi’s peaceful handling of its own electoral transition, which saw him concede defeat and ensure a smooth handover of power to President Arthur Peter Mutharika. This example of democratic maturity, according to the Commonwealth, made him a suitable figure to help guide political dialogue elsewhere on the continent.

As the talks continue in Tanzania, officials say the environment remains calm and constructive. Dr. Chakwera is expected to continue engaging all key stakeholders before presenting a preliminary assessment to the Commonwealth.
