Former Malawi leader Peter Mutharika to address nation Sunday

Former President Peter Mutharika

The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) says former Malawi leader Peter Mutharika, who is the President of the party, will address the nation on Thursday on what it said on ‘ issues of national interest.”

According to the statement announcing the press conference on the “political and economic situation’ in the country, the event will take place on Sunday 17th July 2022 at 1:30 pm at the leader’s PAGE House in the country’s lakeshore district of Mangochi.

Mutharika’s address is coming barely days after Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a good number of DPP senior officials suspected of corruption. They are former Minister for Homeland Security, Nicolas Dausi who has been let go on bail today, Businessperson Festone Mulli whose businesses have been blacklisted by the Malawi Attorney General not to deal with the government any longer, and former Chief Secretary to Government Lloyd Muhara, who helped Mulli defraud the government by approving that Mulli pay the loan, which is in the billions, he received from the government over a 50-year period.

Mutharika himself and his former Chief Advisor Hetherwick Ntaba is also being investigated by the Police for possible arrest in the murder of people with Albinism. The High Court in Blantyre in Masambuka case, a person with albinism, who was murdered in cold blood, wondered why Mutharika and Ntaba were not arrested considering the fact that the suspects, one of them being a police officer, kept on naming the duo as those behind the killing of Masambuka.

Politically, Mutharika, an octogenarian, will be expected to respond to what the DPP operatives are saying as calls from across the country requesting him to contest the 2025 elections as a presidential candidate.
