FAM President Haiya brings new leadership as he forfeits salary towards football development

Haiya: FAM President

It seems we are constructing the foundation of Malawi piece by piece, as the recently inaugurated President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Fleetwood Haiya, has declared his intent to direct his $25,000 FIFA honorarium for this year, equivalent to approximately K42 million, toward initiatives aimed at fostering football development in the nation.

Haiya unveiled this plan during a press briefing held at Mpira Village in Chiwembe-Blantyre, emphasizing that the funds will predominantly be allocated to youth football development initiatives spanning the entire country.

In addition to sharing details about the utilization of the FIFA honorarium, Haiya provided insights into his recent meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Saudi Arabia.

Furthermore, he revealed that FIFA has earmarked around K13 billion for Malawi’s football operations and projects under the FIFA Forward 3 Programme, spanning from 2023 through 2026. Haiya assumed the role of FAM President after a decisive victory over Walter Nyamilandu Manda during the elective conference on December 16 in Mzuzu, securing 23 votes against 13.
