Engineer Mumba disqualified: MCP Convention

Engineer Mumba: barred

Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba, widely considered a leading candidate for the position of First Deputy President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), has been disqualified from the race, according to an announcement by Kezzie Msukwa, Chairperson of the Convention.

Msukwa revealed the list of approved candidates on Tuesday during a press briefing in Lilongwe, with Mumba’s name notably absent. Contrarily, Msukwa has approved his own candidacy alongside Moses Kumkuyu, Ken Zikhale Ng’oma, and Catherine Gotani Hara for the position.

Meanwhile, today, August 6, 2024, the High Court in Lilongwe is set to rule on a related issue where Eddie Banda challenged the MCP NEC’s decision to bar newcomers from contesting in the party’s convention, arguing the resolution was unfair.

“He has to wait for the Court to decide. This is his first hope. Even in the face of an adverse ruling from the court, he can throw his last dice by involving the delegates to literally move a motion during the convention to nullify the resolution which NEC made, as the party’s convention is the supreme decision-making organ of the party,” said Joseph Masina, a senior political analyst.
