ENERGY MINISTER MATOLA: ESCOM’S DIRTY POLITICS MUST END — MALAWIANS DEMAND LIGHT, NOT SABOTAGE

Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola has been challenged to act decisively as Malawians express outrage over ESCOM’s suspension of new electricity connections.

The move, which ESCOM claims was prompted by the tragic death of one worker in Area 25, is being branded as sabotage against the government of President Lazarus Chakwera. Critics argue that halting all new connections because of one accident is “like refusing to plant maize because one farmer was bitten by a snake.”

Observers note that accidents occur in hospitals, factories, and on roads every day, yet essential services never grind to a halt. Why then should Malawians be left in darkness? The growing belief is that ESCOM’s move is a calculated ploy designed to frustrate citizens ahead of the September 16 elections, shifting anger towards Chakwera and the MCP government.

The open letter, penned by Lilongwe resident John Trevor Kathumba, accuses ESCOM of “using darkness as a political weapon.” He calls on Matola to take a leaf from Trade and Industry Minister Vitumbiko Mumba, who recently stood firm against traders hoarding cement and inflating prices.

“Minister Matola, fight for Malawians. Fight for your government. Without President Chakwera, you would not even be a minister. Show loyalty. Order ESCOM to resume new connections now,” Kathumba urged.

He warned that history will not forgive silence: “Either you fight now for your people, or you stand aside while saboteurs laugh in the dark. Malawi is watching.”
