Renowned Malawian author and corporate governance expert, Dr. Anthony Mukumbwa, has strongly condemned those attempting to belittle the recent State of the Nation Address (SONA) over what he calls an “insignificant” 5% of incomplete projects.
Taking to Facebook, Mukumbwa questioned why Parliament is focusing on a minor issue instead of recognizing the overall progress made by the government.
“Shouldn’t Parliament concentrate on the substance over form in the SONA debate? Should they really belabour the 5% erroneous depiction of incomplete projects or concentrate on the efficiency and impact of the 95% completed projects while encouraging the completion of the remaining ones?” Mukumbwa wrote.
He further argued that such political nitpicking undermines meaningful debate, comparing the situation to a student who scores 95% but is judged solely on the 5% they got wrong.
“I thought 95% is a serious distinction. Is a 95% project implementation level not serious excellence in project management? Or does politics mean looking at negativity only? I am just wondering why all this fuss!” he added.
Mukumbwa’s remarks come amid heated debate in Parliament, where opposition lawmakers have latched onto the 5% issue to discredit the government’s achievements. However, many argue that the focus should be on ensuring the completion of remaining projects rather than using the figure as a political weapon.
