Chakwera’s Railway Renaissance; Witnesses First Fuel Cargo Haulage from Mozambique to Nsanje

Fuel Haulage arriving via train from Mozambique

FuelA product of diplomacy, vision and determination, President Chakwera has today marked a significant milestone in Malawi’s transport system, showcasing to the Malawian people the reason why he needs to continue as this country’s President next year.

Hear this: For the first time in 41 years, it is President Chakwera who has commissioned the first cargo train into Malawi from the Port of Beira in Mozambique through Marka in Nsanje.

“This means that we have finally harnessed newly-found opportunities meant to facilitate seamless trade routes to the coastline and ease the cost of imports. On our end, haulage of the 1.2 million-litre fuel cargo has been made possible by the ongoing 72-kilometre railway line being constructed by my administration from Marka to Bangula,” said the President on his official Facebook Page.

According to the President, “this landmark project plus other ongoing rail rehabilitation initiatives are part of a portfolio of strategic infrastructure positioned to awaken the transport sector as a driver of economic growth.”

He added:

“This uninterrupted access to both Nacala and Beira trade routes through rail are testimony of how my administration is capitalising on opportunities that exist within the Malawi/Mozambique interdependence. Fellow Malawians, when I promised to rehabilitate the country’s railway system, this is it!”
