It has been announced that plans are underway for the Ministry of Education to introduce Portuguese and Swahili languages in its curriculum. This follows a directive President Lazarus Chakwera gave in April this year.
Ministry of Education Public Relations Officer, Chikondi Chimala says the ministry is consulting various stakeholders to bang heads on how to go about the idea.
Chimala says they are working with the Malawi Institute of Education, a mandated institution for curriculum development and review.
According to Chakwera, the introduction of Swahili and Portuguese will boost trade by reducing the communication barriers when Malawians engage with citizens from countries with little to no English background.
