During the book launch event titled ‘Religion and Politics’ at Kigali Events garden in the capital Lilongwe on Wednesday, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera emphasized the significant impact of the relationship between religion and politics on societies, stating that it has the potential to either build or break nations.
He highlighted that discussions concerning the intersection of politics and religion have been more prominent during his time as president because he is the first person in the country’s history to assume the presidential office after serving as a religious leader.
Chakwera acknowledged that some individuals have attempted to undermine his religious calling due to his involvement in politics. He described the book as an invaluable resource for introspection rather than a topic for public debate.
“This book has my endorsement not because of who the authors are, but because it is the first book written by Malawians on how the tension between religion and politics unfolds within Malawi context and how we can proceed in a way that builds on our success in the past,” said Chakwera.
