Blantyre on Sunday was painted red as thousands upon thousands of Malawians flooded Njamba Freedom Park to listen to President Lazarus Chakwera. The atmosphere was electric, the songs were loud, the cheers endless, as the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) leader once again showed why he remains the people’s choice.
Standing before the massive crowd, President Chakwera delivered a powerful message: starting tomorrow, he will announce reduced prices of fertiliser so that every farmer, rich or poor, can afford to buy. He told the people that the cheap fertiliser has already arrived in the country and will be distributed fairly to make sure that no Malawian is left behind. The announcement was met with wild celebrations, with people chanting his name and declaring MCP the only party that cares for the poor.
The President also spoke about the cost of living, reminding Malawians that the problem is not only in Malawi but everywhere across the globe. “Even people from Mozambique and Zambia are coming to our country to buy fuel because Malawi has managed to keep things moving despite the challenges,” he said, drawing applause from the crowd.
Chakwera promised that he has a solid plan to bring down the prices of goods in Malawi. Among his plans is the rehabilitation of the Nsanje railway line, which will help reduce transport costs and bring prices down. He also explained why he chose Vitumbiko Mumba as his running mate: to deal with corrupt cartels who hoard fertiliser, fuel, cement, and sugar in order to create a false image that Chakwera is failing. “These people are enemies of progress, and we will not allow them to continue punishing Malawians,” he thundered.
Sunday’s rally was not only about promises but also about power. It was a show of strength. The opposition, watching from the sidelines, is now in disarray and shock after seeing Blantyre, once their stronghold, rise and embrace Chakwera. The sight of thousands filling Njamba to the brim was proof that the MCP machinery is strong and unstoppable.
As the sun set over Blantyre, one thing became clear: Chakwera is not only in control of the campaign trail, but he has also captured the heart of the people. With cheap fertiliser already in the country, with a clear plan to fix the economy, and with crowds swelling bigger at every stop, the opposition is left crumbling, confused, and defeated even before voting day.
