Indicative of how much the people of Malawi’s capital city and surrounding areas missed their leader, unprecedented multitudes of people thronged to the linings of the newly-constructed expressway along the M1 road to welcome President Chakwera on his arrival from his official trip to the United States.

President Chakwera left the country two weeks ago for New York where he participated in the UN General Assembly and conducted business engagements with world bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), among others thereafter.

Upon his arrival in Lilongwe, business was momentarily brought to a standstill as a jubilant crowd engulfed the Presidential Convoy carrying the President as it made its way from Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) to Kamuzu Palace, the Presidential address.

The presidential convoy was forced to move at a snail’s pace, as the multitude, majority of them clad in party colours, lead the vehicles from Area 30 right through Area 10 to Area 18 round about where the President momentarily stopped to greet them.

In his remarks, President Chakwera took a moment to address last-week’s insane calls of brutality by DPP regional Governor for the South, Daudi Chikwanje who incited his party followers to “burn” anyone seen wearing MCP regalia in his area. In his remarks, President Chakwera explained that the country belongs to all Malawians and that nobody should live in fear.

He explained that democracy allows people to work with people of their choice. On this note, the Malawi leader advised the people to coexist peacefully despite holding different political views.

He also encouraged the people to work hard to develop their lives and the country at large.

Speaking before the President, the MCP Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda, deplored politics of hatred and castigation. He called on Malawians to remain united and work together with the current administration to develop the country.
