The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has been immersed in chaos, rendering it untrustworthy in the eyes of any sensible Malawian. The recent tumult within the party involves incessant internal conflicts, particularly in the scramble for positions. To put it bluntly, the DPP’s current state is far from reliable.
In the recent twist of events, Kondwani Nankhumwa, the Opposition leader and de-jure Vice President of the party, expressed regret over the party’s decision to eject long-standing members who stood by it during challenging times. Nankhumwa, speaking at a press briefing in Thyolo district, labeled the move as illogical, emphasizing that the party’s leadership, from local to regional levels, has been operating beyond the expiration of their tenures. He called upon party officials advocating for the removal of stalwarts to cease their efforts, warning of impending chaos and confusion.
Addressing the matter at the party’s headquarters in Blantyre, the so-called “Madala team” led by George Chaponda, the purportedly appointed DPP vice president for the south, denied any intentions to oust leaders. Chaponda asserted that the party strictly adheres to its constitution, assuring members that no dismissals are on the horizon. Dismissing Nankhumwa’s claims, Chaponda, alongside party spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, refuted the allegations and blamed Nankhumwa for taking the party to court multiple times. Namalomba went further to suggest that Nankhumwa is free to leave the party. This stance was conveyed during a press conference attended by Chaponda, Namalomba, and the party’s regional governor for the south, Charles Mchacha.
