DPP to Appeal 90-Day Convention High Court Order Says Shadreck Namalomba

On Friday, the High Court in Lilongwe ordered the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to conduct an elective national convention for selecting new leadership within 90 days of the order. This ruling stemmed from a complaint filed, among others, by one of its prominent members, Kondwani Nankhumwa, who sought to invalidate the decisions made by the party’s National Governing Council (NGC) at Nkopola Lodge in July of this year.

High Court Judge Simeon Mdeza emphasized that the positions within the party became vacant due to the passage of the designated time period for their occupancy, necessitating fresh elections for new officeholders.

Nevertheless, the DPP, represented by spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, has issued a statement dated 1st October, 2023 stating that the NGC convened and decided to approach the courts to apply for a stay of the decision, as they plan to exercise their right to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

The DPP is currently experiencing significant internal conflicts and disputes, resulting in the party neglecting its duty to serve the interests of Malawians from the opposition benches, which is contrary to the functioning of a normally operational democracy.
