Friend of Malawi Police Kananji arrested for trying to ‘overthrow’ Inspector General

Kananji Good old days but now has been netted

Quite daring and surreal. In May this year, a 26 year old man Innocent Kananji was in the news for his generous gesture. Noting the rampant crime in Blantyre, he donated money amounting to MK110, 000 to go towards installation of Police CCTV cameras. The police probably didn’t know that the guy pretty well know that there is no ‘free lunch in town’ as he had plans to overthrow the Inspector General of Police Meryln Yolamu.

Basically few months after the donation, Innocent Kananji is in police custody on suspicion that he created the fake Facebook account bearing the name and photo of the Police Inspector General, Meryln Yolamu.

According to the Cyber Crime Unit of the Malawi Police Service, the suspect is alleged to have used the account to dupe money from some youths amounting to K150, 000 on the pretext that he would recruit them into the Malawi Police Service.

“Police investigations have also revealed that the suspect has different 13 Facebook accounts most of them bearing female names and pictures which are also investigated,” reads part of the statement by the Service.

Kananji is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charge of cyber spamming contrary to Section 91 of Electronic Transaction and Cyber Security Act of 2016.
