Over 20 people are feared dead in Nsanje district after a dugout canoe they were sailing in got capsized at Phokera Dock on Monday.
Confirming the development was Nsanje Central constituency parliamentarian, Kafandikhale Mandevana who rushed to the scene to be among the search and rescue team but disclosed that the exact number of people feared dead is not yet known.
“I am right at the scene of the incident. The accident has indeed taken place here at Phokera Dock where the dung-out canoe has capsized. Different reports are indicating that the canoe had 32 people on board while others say they were 41 or 46, so we are yet to confirm the exact number of people who are dead”, said the lawmaker.
Meanwhile, the body of a dead baby has been retrieved while search and rescue operations go on.
