President Lazarus has left the country for Davos, Switzerland where he will attend this year’s world economic forum from May 21st to 25th.
At the forum, the Malawi leader will join other World Leaders in deliberating on how economies are responding to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia-Ukraine war, climate change impact, and a myriad of issues that have a bearing on socioeconomic development.
“I am primarily attending World Economic Forum as Malawi leader, over and above responsibilities as chairperson of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).
“Our attendance at this important global platform presents a rare opportunity to vulnerable economies like ours to cultivate solidarity, get our discussion to the priority deck and attain the right leverage for tangible multilateral solutions,” said Chakwera about the trip.
He also pledged to give Malawi issues adequate significance at the global forum to ensure that the country’s economic recovery solicits adequate support.
Meanwhile, according to the ministry of foreign affairs, on his way back from Davos, the president will pass by Malabo, Equatorial Guinea to attend two African Union (AU) summits from May 26th to 28th.
“At the 15th Extraordinary Summit Meeting of the AU on Humanitarian challenges, African leaders will consolidate efforts in resource mobilisation and strategies to address humanitarian challenges facing the continent.
“While the 16th Extraordinary Summit Meeting of the AU on Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government will focus on sustainable solutions to the waning off of constitutionalism and a surge in terrorism on the continent,” reads a secular from the ministry.
