Toyota Malawi Limited was an idea of a couple Derek and Jean Fried that travelled on a business trip to Japan. Searching for the right type of merchandise meant many cab rides for the entrepreneurial couple and it did not escape their notice that each taxi they took was a Toyota.
The couple was impressed by the Toyota and immediately an idea came up of becoming an agent for Toyota vehicles in what was then Nyasaland, now the Republic of Malawi.
