Malawi Parliament Recalled to Debate Crucial Election Law Changes

President Lazarus Chakwera

Lilongwe, Malawi — July 25, 2025–President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has officially recalled Malawi’s National Assembly to meet on 5th August 2025, just weeks after it was dissolved ahead of the country’s upcoming general elections. The decision, published in the Malawi Government Gazette, follows growing concerns over urgent legal matters tied to the September 16 polls.

According to the statement, the President is using his powers under Section 67 (4) of the Constitution, which allows him to bring Parliament back if he believes there is a national emergency or constitutional issue that needs immediate attention. In this case, the issue is related to Malawi’s election laws — particularly the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government (Amendment) Bill.

“Something important has come up that cannot wait,” reads the official notice. “There are laws that need to be passed before the next election can be properly run.”

The National Assembly was dissolved on 23rd July 2025 in preparation for the upcoming polls. However, President Chakwera believes changes must be made urgently to protect Malawians’ right to vote, as outlined in the Constitution under Section 40 (3).

Political analysts say this move shows the government wants to make sure the 2025 elections are free, fair, and run smoothly — without confusion or loopholes.

The Parliament will now meet next month to debate and possibly pass the amendment bill before Malawians head to the ballot box.
