Malawi Kwacha surges in Black Market after Decisive Action by Pres. Chakwera

President Lazarus Chakwera in suit

President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has exposed what he calls an orchestrated scheme by a cartel aligned with the opposition, particularly the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), designed to destabilize the economy and tarnish the government’s image. Their sinister objective? To make Malawians suffer so much that, come election time, they vote the MCP out of power. It’s a familiar trick, reminiscent of DPP’s tactics during the cashgate scandal that helped oust Joyce Banda.

This time, however, Chakwera isn’t sitting idly by. He’s taken the gloves off and is fighting back against this absurdity. Prices of basic goods, including Kaunjika second-hand clothes, have been artificially inflated, due to DPP’s connivance with unscrupulous traders—an obvious ploy to stoke public anger against the government. Chakwera has reversed this.

Even the forex shortage, which led to fuel scarcities and further price hikes, wasn’t a natural occurrence but a calculated move to turn Malawians against Chakwera. But the DPP’s plot has been laid bare.

In response, President Chakwera, alongside Reserve Bank Governor Dr. Mafuta Mwale, has stepped in decisively to dismantle these sabotage efforts. The result? The Malawi Kwacha has surged by a remarkable 44% on the parallel market, with Zodiak Online confirming its strengthened position against the dollar. This sharp rebound is proof that the opposition’s tricks are being unraveled and defeated.

While the opposition hoped to see chaos reign, Chakwera’s leadership is steering the country back to stability, with an optimistic path ahead for the MCP as they continue their work to restore normalcy before the September 2025 elections. The writing is on the wall: Chakwera is not easily swayed by such underhanded tactics, and his government remains firmly in control, much to the frustration of his political adversaries.
