Malawi’s controversial “political prophet,” Austin Liabunya, recently made waves once more with a bold prophecy: “Like it or not, Lazarus Chakwera will win the 2025 presidential election.” Known for his divisive prophecies, Liabunya has a history of stirring political debates, hailed by some as a true seer and dismissed by others as a charlatan.
Back in 2013, Liabunya predicted Arthur Peter Mutharika’s win, much to the ire of supporters of Joyce Banda’s People’s Party and doubters within the MCP. Detractors branded him a “fake prophet” and urged the public to “test the spirits.” But when Mutharika claimed victory, Liabunya’s prophecy was vindicated.
He didn’t stop there. Liabunya later predicted Mutharika’s downfall, accusing the former president of satanic rituals and condemning his government’s inaction during the wave of attacks on people with albinism. He also foresaw Lazarus Chakwera rising to power, with Saulos Chilima forming his own party before reuniting with Chakwera to unseat Mutharika in 2020—a prophecy that became reality.
Now, as the 2025 election approaches, Liabunya has once again waded into Malawi’s political waters. He predicts another Chakwera victory.
Liabunya’s latest prophecy has sparked mixed reactions across the political spectrum. MCP supporters are celebrating, while DPP and UTM loyalists are dismayed by the prospect of another five years in opposition, courtesy of a prophet they’re quick to dismiss. But as Liabunya likes to say, “It is what it is.”
