Government Cracks Whip on Non Complying Traders, Mpinganjira’s Ekhaya Farms Foods Shop as Foot Lovers Branch Gets Penalty Fine

As the National wide surprise market surveillance continues, the Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) has closed Ekhaya Farm Foods shop at Kanengo in Lilongwe.

Triephonia Mpinganjira, whose husband Thom Mpinganjira opened Ekhaya franchise was recently embroiled in tax evasion allegation in which her car rental business is said to dodge tax obligations at Malawi Revenue Authority.

In the day, MBS also visited Food Lovers market situated in Area 38 Kanengo where noncompliance issues including stocking rotten food products and operating in a leaking warehouse were identified.

However, the bureau has not closed the outlet, instead has imposed a penalty fine and instructions to rectify the issues.

According to MBS communications officer Wazamazama Katatu, after inspecting the market, they have found that the quality control system of the supermarket is fine only that there are some few non conformities.

He said the market is supposed to pay K2.6 Million to the bureau: “We have not closed the market because their level of conformities is not gross, we have instructed them to work on those areas,” he said.

On Monday the bureau inspected three Sana outlets in Lilongwe, City Centre Chipiku and Area 38 Food Lovers Market.
